Ben Martindale and Andrew Neal showed admirable lower order fight before Nottinghamshire’s Second XI ultimately went down against Somerset by 50 runs.

After resuming their second innings on 14/1 in pursuit of 300 to win, Matthew Montgomery (27) and Dane Schadendorf (30) had taken the score to 49-1 before perishing to Marchant De Lange and Ollie Sale respectively.

A collapse to 98-6 ensued before Martindale (42 off 120), Neal (48 off 117) and Matt Carter (37 off 59) ensured that there were some uncomfortable moments for the home side prior to the visitors ultimately being dismissed, in 90.5 overs, for 249.

The result means that Nottinghamshire have now won one and lost one of their opening two Second XI Championship contests.
