Lyndon James, Brett Hutton, and Liam Patterson-White all took three wickets each as Nottinghamshire made light work of a docile pitch to complete a final-day victory by ten wickets against Sussex in Hove.

After James had claimed one Martlets wicket late on Day Three, play resumed with the hosts 29 for one and trailing overall by 130.

There was some resistance from opener Alistair Orr, who made 45, as Sussex reached lunch only three down, but wickets then fell regularly as the hosts were eventually dismissed for 172 moments after tea.

That left the Green and Golds requiring just 14 for victory, a target they eased to inside three overs, as Ben Slater struck the winning runs off Jamie Atkins.

Earlier, as the Brighton Marathon snaked along the sunny south-coast seafront, the starting gun was fired on Notts’ own run to the finish line as they sought a final-day win just over a mile from the race’s endpoint.

There was initially some resistance from Orr and nightwatchman Atkins, before Hutton broke the deadlock an hour into the morning when he saw the latter hook a short ball into the hands of Calvin Harrison at fine leg.

One brought two as James also struck shortly afterwards, with Tom Alsop nicking through to Tom Moores behind the stumps after flashing a wide drive at the all-rounder.

Oli Carter was less that way inclined, as he and Orr obdurately ground their way through the rest of the morning, and Sussex took lunch on 89 for three, still 70 in arrears.

The break proved a welcome opportunity for the Green and Golds to recharge, and Hutton wasted no time in pouncing after lunch, pinning Carter in front for 17.

He then followed it up with the most valuable wicket yet, that of Orr, whose 161-ball stay at the crease ended with him on 45, thanks to a lightning-quick catch from Slater at short leg.

Patterson-White picked up another prize catch when he saw Tom Clark well held by Steven Mullaney at slip for 26, before James saw Delray Rawlins glove one into his own stumps for nine to leave Sussex seven down.

Having taken a five-for in the hosts’ first-innings, it felt only right that Academy graduate spinner Patterson-White would be the one to wrap things up, as he snaffled the final two wickets, both lbw, either side of tea.

First, Archie Lenham was pinned for 18, and then once the sides re-emerged after the final break, the same fate befell Henry Crocombe for 11.

With confirmation that last man Danial Ibrahim would not bat due to an injury sustained in the field yesterday, that left Notts requiring a meagre score to confirm victory.

Haseeb Hameed struck three fours in a row off Clark to confidently break the back of the chase, before Slater gently pushed two into the covers to complete the win.
