Ben Duckett and Haseeb Hameed set a new record for a Nottinghamshire second-wicket partnership as the Green and Golds put Derbyshire further under the cosh on day two at the Incora County Ground.
Duckett and Hameed’s stand of 402 broke a 132-year-old record that dated back to Notts’ first ever official County Championship outing, surpassing the 398 that Arthur Shrewsbury and William Gunn put on in 1890.
The duo formed the integral building blocks of an eventual total of 618/8 declared, as Liam Patterson-White also swiped a speedy half-century in another three-figure partnership with James Pattinson early in the afternoon.
Derbyshire then found themselves reduced to 54/2 by Luke Fletcher and Dane Paterson, before recovering throughout the evening to reach stumps on 164/2.
Cooler climes than the record-breaking heat of yesterday greeted the players on their arrival in Derby on the second morning, though the legacy of the 38°C temperatures remained clear in a starw-coloured outfield.
The first order of the day was for Hameed to handsomely on-drive Sam Conners for four to both see the partnership pass 400 and to officially push Shrewsbury and Gunn into second place.
The pair had been batting for almost six hours at that point, facing a combined 509 deliveries, but there would be no further runs added after that point, as Duckett was bowled by Ben Aitchison in the fourth over of the day.
He departed the field for his highest Notts score of 241, doing so to the sound of rapturous applause from an appreciative crowd.
The wicket did, however, seem to fire up Derbyshire’s previously-demoralised attack, and though the visitors remained far ahead at 448/2, they did find themselves losing a further five wickets in the morning.
The last of the quintet to depart was Hameed, who had battled valiantly against Aitchison, Conners and George Scrimshaw, but was agonisingly dismissed by the former while four short of a maiden First-Class double-century.
But Patterson-White and Pattinson's brutal partnership after lunch ensured Notts remained in the ascendancy.
Taking their lead from Hameed and Duckett, they added 105 in just 84 balls. Patterson-White raced to his individual fifty from 46 deliveries, doing so with a gigantic straight six back over Mattie McKiernan’s head.
His dismissal for 54 brought about the declaration, with Pattinson having contributed a boundary-filled innings of 45 from 49 balls.
Already facing down a mammoth deficit as they re-entered the fray, Derbyshire soon lost Luis Reece, miscuing Fletcher to Mullaney at mid-on.
His fellow opener Harry Came also went shortly after as Lyndon James dived forward to snaffle a mistimed hook off Paterson at short midwicket, leaving the hosts 79/2 at tea.
But Derbyshire displayed stout resistance in the final session to see off Fletcher and Paterson alongside Pattinson and Mullaney, the latter conceding only eight from his ten overs.
Unbeaten Derbyshire duo Brooke Guest and Wayne Madsen will resume in the morning having hit fifties, but with their side still trailing by 454.
