Matthew Montgomery spoke of the emotion he felt at close on day one, having reached his maiden first-class hundred for Nottinghamshire in an innings which set the foundation in a crucial clash against Durham.

The top-order batter reached the landmark off 198 deliveries, and hit 14 fours on his way to an unbeaten ton, and admitted the will and determination to reach three figures overwhelmed any nerves felt during his innings.

The South Africa-born batter’s hundred was backed up by a century from Haseeb Hameed, who reached the milestone for the fourth time this season, with the pair notching a partnership worth 180 before Hameed was caught by Scott Borthwick off Matthew Potts’ bowling.
