Wicketkeeper-batter Scarlett Hughes has signed a retainer contract with The Blaze, joining the region with immediate effect.

The 21-year-old Essex pathway product arrives from Sunrisers, where she made seven appearances in the 2022 season.

That included a Rachael Heyhoe Flint fixture against Central Sparks, in which she took two catches and claimed a pair of stumpings.

In 2023, the left-hander played nine times for Essex as her side secured the Women’s London Championship, top scoring with 67 against Surrey.

“I’m really excited to get going with The Blaze,” Hughes said

“I’ve had the chance to get to know the group and the coaches over the last couple of weeks and it feels like a great place for me to continue and kick on over the next year.

“There is a good spirit and energy around with the success the team achieved last year, and I’m looking forward to being part of that when the summer comes around.

“Until then I’ve got a few months to keep working at my game to be in the best position possible ahead of the new season.”

Hughes - who is balancing cricket with university commitments in London - joins having previously played in Lightning’s Regional Development Centre, led by current Head Coach of The Blaze, Chris Guest.

During her tenure with Sunrisers, Hughes also worked with The Blaze’s Senior Regional Talent Manager, Cain Hamilton-Boyle.

“I’ve known Scarlett for some time - she’s a player who is really committed to cricket and has a lot of potential,” Guest said.

“She adds to our keeping ranks alongside Ella Claridge and Sarah Bryce - who is likely to have international commitments across 2024 - and adds depth to our batting, particularly with the left-hand variation.

“We saw at various points last season the value of having contributions from the entire squad, and Scarlett is someone who has the capacity to play an important role when the opportunities arise.

“Already in her time with us she has displayed a strong desire to keep developing, and she’ll be a valuable member of this squad across the next year.”
