A fourth five-fer of the summer from Brett Hutton helped Nottinghamshire bowl Somerset out for 163 on the first day of play at the County Ground.

Ben Slater went on to accumulate an unbeaten 67 as Notts made significant inroads into their hosts' first-innings total, sitting 18 runs behind on 145/4 at stumps.

Three wickets for a returning Matt Carter and two for Dane Paterson aided the bowling attack, before helpful contributions from Matthew Montgomery and Steven Mullaney ensured Notts ended the day with the upper hand.

After winning the toss, Somerset invited the visitors to bowl first, and Hutton immediately threatened, with Lammonby and Dickson managing a single between them as the seamer took the first three wickets within 40 balls.

The first was a beauty, as Dickson’s bails were sent flying by a delivery that deceived the opener and dismissed him for a single.

The second deflected off Lammonby’s outside edge, with Clarke pouching at first slip to remove the other opener for 24.

That was swiftly followed by Bartlett being given lbw for 13 to complete a terrific triple for Hutton, recording figures of 3/22 off his first seven overs.

Hutton’s heroics meant Somerset were 49/3 after 13 overs, with Notts then deploying the spin of Matthew Carter after Abell and Kohler-Cadmore built a steady partnership.

And with Carter's second County Championship over since September 2020, he secure a wicket.

An oil stain left by the roller was in a friendly area for the twirler, and that may have played on Abell’s mind as he edged Carter’s seventh ball to Mullaney, removing the right-handed batter for 19.

Somerset took lunch at 106/4, but the hosts weren’t prepared for the early onslaught of Nottinghamshire wickets after the break.

Carter started his afternoon by removing Rew for 10 courtesy of a wonderful one-handed diving take by Montgomery.

Paterson then rapped Kohler-Cadmore’s pads in the next over to dismiss the 28-year-old for 38, and followed that by removing Craig Overton for a single.

The England international clipped Paterson’s delivery off his outside edge and, with the help of a parry by Carter, allowed Clarke to react, catch and complete the wicket.

Carter dismissed Davey for 4 lbw before Hutton notched the final two wickets of the innings.

The Nottinghamshire openers had both the oil-slick-festooned pitch and the Kookaburra ball to contend with, and Hameed was first depart.

Montgomery and Slater stabilised the innings, however, amassing 71 runs before Montgomery was victim of an unfortunate dismissal off the bowling of Aldridge.

Joe Clarke was adjudged lbw on 12, with Lyndon James departing soon after, but Slater remained composed, bringing up 50 from 104 balls.

And the left-hander would see out the day in the company of his captain, compiling a 40-run stand.
