With searing pace and finely channeled aggression, Shaheen Shah Afridi is already heralded as a great of the global T20 game, despite his tender years.

Before turning 19, the left-arm quick made his International T20, One Day International and Test debuts and, aged 21, the 6ft6in paceman was named captain of Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League.

Still just 22, the Pakistani’s career statistics belie his age. Here, we take a look at the numbers behind Notts Outlaws’ newest Vitality Blast signing.

International Caps: 104

Across all the formats, Afridi has totted up over a hundred appearances for the Men in Green in an international career spanning five years.

After making his IT20 debut in April 2018, he collected his ODI cap five months later, and made his Test bow in December of the same year.

In total, he has made 45 IT20, 32 ODI, and 25 Test appearances for Pakistan.

IT20 Wickets: 58

Afrid went wicketless but contributed an economical return of 0-27 from four overs on debut as West Indies were limited to 153 in Karachi, a total chased with 19 balls to spare by Pakistan.

He claimed first three international scalps in his second appearances against Australia, the same opposition against which he has taken the most wickets (11).

His record against Bangladesh, however, stands in a league of its own, with his eight wickets against the Tigers collected at an average of 10.25, and economy of 5.12.

Three of his eight wickets against England came at Trent Bridge in the summer of 2021, with Alex Hales a victim of a rip-roaring delivery in November's World Cup Final.

Career T20 Wickets: 195

Only six of Afridi’s countrymen have taken more wickets for Pakistan, and few would bet against the left-armer being at the top of that list one day.

He already tops the pile when it comes to dismissals for Lahore Qalandars. The tally of 94 - at an average of 20.75 - is 28 more than second placed Haris Rauf.

Afridi’s short format wickets elsewhere have come for Pakistan’s domestic outfit Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Hampshire, and Pakistan representative teams.

PSL Titles: 2

A few eyebrows were raised when, in 2021, Afridi was named captain of Lahore Qalandars - the franchise for whom he made his Pakistan Super League debut in 2018.

The Punjab-based outfit were vindicated in their decision within months, however, as Afridi became the youngest captain to lift any global T20 title, usurping Steve Smith who was 22 when he led Sydney Sixers to the Big Bash trophy in 2012.

He came within touching distance of winning a second career T20 trophy with his national side in the winter as Pakistan faced England in the final of the ICC T20 World Cup, but the seamer was forced from the field through injury and momentum swung to the Three Lions who secured the title with an over to spare.

A second was secured in March 2023, however, and in the most dramatic circumstances, too.

Having clubbed a 15-ball 44* in the first innings, Qalandars were left defending 13 from the final over; a target which became four off the last.

Only two were struck by Khushdil Shah, giving Shaheen another chance to hold the PSL trophy aloft.
