Steven Mullaney will captain Notts Outlaws in the 2023 edition of the Vitality Blast, after Dan Christian’s stint as T20 skipper came to a close last summer.

Mullaney, who succeeded Chris Read as club captain in 2018, led the Outlaws to the quarter-finals of the 2021 Blast following Christian's call-up to the Australia white-ball squad.

He lifted the LV= Insurance County Championship Division Two trophy as skipper last summer, as Nottinghamshire sealed their return to red-ball cricket’s top flight at the first time of asking.

Early-bird tickets for the Outlaws' 2023 Vitality Blast campaign are on sale until 11.59pm on Wednesday 3 May. Secure your seats here...

“Any opportunity to captain this great club and lead the lads onto the field is a massive honour, so I can’t wait to get started in the Blast this summer,” he said.

“Dan was a magnificent leader for us for so many years, and I learned a lot about the art of T20 captaincy from him, and from my time as skipper in 2021.

“We’ve got a really exciting group this year. Shaheen Afridi, Colin Munro and Olly Stone are simply world-class T20 players – as are so many of the lads we’ve had playing for us year in, year out in the Blast.

“We’ll be doing everything we can to give it a real good crack, and give our supporters plenty of entertainment to enjoy at Trent Bridge.”

Mullaney has made 163 appearances in T20 cricket for the Outlaws, scoring 1,560 runs, while his tally of 118 wickets is bettered only by Samit Patel in Notts colours.

The all-rounder won T20 silverware with his adopted county in 2017 and 2020, having also been part of the sides which won the 2010 County Championship and the One-Day Cups of 2013 and 2017.

"Steven captained the side exceptionally well in 2021, and his ability to stay calm at crucial moments was a notable feature of his leadership," said Head Coach Peter Moores.

"His extensive experience of this format of the game allowed him to make key tactical decisions under pressure, which had a big influence on us dominating the league stage of the tournament that year.

"I know he is as excited as I am about the group of players we have for this season's campaign, and the opportunity we have to add to the two T20 trophies we have won in recent years."
