Haseeb Hameed has been appointed Nottinghamshire's new club captain.

The opener, capped ten times by his country, takes the reins after four fruitful summers in Notts colours that have featured landmark moments aplenty.

First outing on the Trent Bridge turf

"I’m full of excitement to start working with my new teammates, and to be playing my cricket at Trent Bridge."

So said Haseeb Hameed as he made the move to Nottinghamshire in the winter of 2019/20.

That first outing as a fully-fledged Trent Bridgian would, of course, be several more months in the making, as sport – and life – were placed on hold by the pandemic.

But the disruption eased enough to permit a shortened season to begin, Hameed strode down the steps of a biosecure Pavilion in August 2020 to begin the latest chapter of his career.

Immediately, he made an impact.

Unfurling what would become a trademark cover drive to great effect on numerous occasions, the opener top-scored on day one against Derbyshire with a fluent 68.

And even in the somewhat unusual circumstances, he declared himself firmly at home.

“Coming to Notts has been a really refreshing change,” he disclosed after that opening day.

“The players have created a very special environment here, and I felt extremely comfortable being myself straight away."

First Notts century

Hameed would notch two further fifties in the course of a five-match Bob Willis Trophy campaign.

His first three-figure score for Notts would arrive early in the following season. As, in the same fixture, would his second.

It marked a line in the sand for both player and county.

Notts had conceded 436 runs in the opening innings of their four-day fixture at Worcestershire in April 2021. In reply, despite Hameed’s 111 from 304 deliveries helping to hold back the tide, the hosts were able to enforce the follow-on.

Nottinghamshire's second innings, however, was the very model of grit, determination and application.

Hameed and his opening partner Ben Slater each hit 114 in an unbroken 236-run stand, securing the kind of draw that feels distinctly like a victory.

The openers' backs-to-the-wall exploits proved inspirational. In the following fixture, Notts tasted red-ball success for the first time in three years.

They would go on to accumulate more points than any other county across the 2021 season, narrowly missing out on silverware due to that year’s conference system.

And it all began in earnest with that New Road rearguard of Hameed and Slater.

First outings as skipper

So far, Hameed has added seven more centuries to his tally in Nottinghamshire colours – including a score of 196 in an astonishing, record-breaking 402-run stand with Ben Duckett at Derby's heatwave-hit County Ground.

His first experience of first-team captaincy for Notts would arrive in the 2022 One-Day Cup, as the Outlaws breezed past Sussex to the delight of a Trent Bridge crowd revelling in the summer holiday entertainment.

Then, in July 2023, injury to Steven Mullaney afforded Hameed the opportunity to take the reins in a First-Class fixture.

The task ahead, against reigning champions and league leaders Surrey at the Kia Oval, was daunting enough.

When Jake Ball and Brett Hutton were then lost to injury and an unusually severe bout of cramp respectively, it seemed positively gargantuan.

But Hameed rallied his troops with enthusiasm and empathy, Lyndon James recording career-best bowling figures to restrict the hosts to under 400.

With the bat, the opener led by example, scoring 67 and 44* as the visitors calmly extinguished the threat posed by their table-topping opponents, securing a draw that would be vital in preserving their First Division status.

It was a performance which perfectly showcased the skill and steadfastness of the side – and the man who has now become their permanent skipper.
