Nottinghamshire and Essex; two First Class County giants each seeking County Championship triumph as a new season dawns.

The visitors to Trent Bridge for the first round fixture won the competition as recently as 2019, with the Green and Golds' last four day triumph coming in 2010, albeit three white ball trophies have returned to Nottingham since then.

The sides have faced off in a total of 139 matches since their first meeting in 1901, with Nottinghamshire winning 34 of those, and drawing 68.

In fact Essex were the opposition for the Green and Golds' top innings score in 2007 - 791 all out.

Having seen their opponents pile up a first-innings total of 700-9 declared over the first two days at Chelmsford, a career-best 240 from Chris Read, following on from Samit Patel’s 117, Mark Wagh’s 107, and backed up by 97 from Graeme Swann, sent the statisticians into overdrive as Nottinghamshire made 791 all out – their highest First Class total.
