Martyn Kiel is relishing the opportunities which will arise from an expanded fixture schedule as Nottinghamshire Women get their 2024 campaign underway on Sunday against Derbyshire (Worksop College, 11am).

After a season hampered by poor weather last year, Head Coach Kiel is ready to welcome a fixture list that features both T20 and one-day contests, with only T20 having been on the schedule in 2023.

Nottinghamshire were one of many sides to see their entire group stage washed out last summer, reaching the semi-final via the drawing of lots before subsequently falling to defeat in the semi-final.

“We’re really looking forward to returning to two formats over the course of the summer," said Kiel.

“Last season was tough for all of us because of the weather; it was hard for the girls who ultimately had limited opportunity to get out there and show what they could do.”

The busier fixture list will see the team enjoy three fixtures per month in May, June and July amongst others throughout the summer – opening up the doors for a number of up-and-coming talents and returning players to showcase their ability.

“We’re very much in a period of transition, which opens a window of opportunity for many of our youngsters to capitalise on and show their potential,” Kiel reflected.

“The professionalism of the women’s game is growing and we want to continue to exploit the chances it hands to us as a team.

“The likes of Maddie Ward, Rhiannon Knowling-Davies, Ella Porter and Liv Baker will benefit from the opportunity to showcase what they can do.

“Annie Williams, Havya Abbott and Evee-Mae Hicklin are in the same boat, so we’ve got a real pool of talent emerging.

“We’re hoping that Amelia Kite, who has been with us for a number of years but is still in the youth of her career, will be able to enjoy a full season in a Notts shirt.

“Diya Badge and Emily Hughes will also have an important role to play this year, so there’s plenty to be excited about with this squad.”

Elsewhere, stalwart all-rounder Sonia Odedra is expected to return to the field this summer, having recently became a mother.

“Sonia sets a wonderful example to our younger cohort," said Kiel.

“It'll be great to see her back in the green and gold again.”
