Nottinghamshire asserted their dominance as the English summer began with three batters reaching half-centuries in the pre-season curtain raiser against Cardiff UCCE at Trent Bridge.

The hosts racked up 325/4 by close - two of which were retirements - with Hasseeb Hameed, Matt Montgomery, Ben Slater and all reaching fifty in the first game of the year on home soil.

Jack Haynes finished unbeaten on a well-crafted 48, while Tom Moores tucked into the visiting attack with 43 from 19 deliveries.

Having elected to bat first, Hameed and Montgomery made hay in an opening stand of 148 before the pair retired with rain having arrived shortly before lunch, the former having made a top score of the day of 83.

Whilst Joe Clarke was caught at long on for 18 - an innings which still included two fours and a six - Slater, who hit two boundaries in his first eight balls - surged past his fifty with a heave into the PKF Smith Cooper stand.

His demise - caught on the deep mid-wicket boundary - came with his score on 63, before Haynes accelerated from his own steady start to hit seven fours and a six.

Moores offered the new Notts batter company as he bludgeoned four fours and four sixes in a cameo before rain interrupted the rest of the day with 50.3 overs bowled.
