The Falcons set Notts a total of 342 for victory with a sixth-wicket partnership between Ross Whiteley and Zak Chappell worth 100.
Slater added 68 as he made his 18th List A half-century but the Outlaws fell short.
After winning the toss, captain Haseeb Hameed chose to bowl first with Falcons' openers Caleb Jewell and Harry Came keeping the scoreboard ticking over in the powerplay despite James Hayes and Brett Hutton coming close to finding the outside edge.
It was Hutton who managed to find the breakthrough as Came’s mis-hit after coming down the track fell to Joe Pocklington on the boundary.
Jewell motored on to his half-century with Yousaf Bin Naeem also scoring quickly until Lyndon James found the outside edge of the latter, in the 20th over.
With Notts’ breaking up the second-wicket partnership for 56, a quick wickets began to fall.
Hayes managed to remove Jewell for 70 after playing onto his own stumps before Tom Moores took an outrageous catch at full-stretch down the legside to dismiss captain Brooke Guest off the bowling of Rob Lord.
After 26 overs the hosts were 118/4, before Joe Pocklington made an impact as he removed Martin Andersson LBW.
Amrit Basra continued to score freely with Ross Whiteley at the other end also scoring well, the pair swinging the momentum back in Derbyshire’s favour.
With ten overs to play, the Falcons were 225/5 with the pair adding 65.
The Outlaws managed to find the key wicket of Basra, as he top-edged one to Hayes for 72 to give Lord his second of the afternoon.
But Whiteley and Zak Chappell accelerated the run-rate to push their total over 300 runs.
The pair added a hundred runs for their sixth-wicket partnership as rhe Falcons finished on 341/8.
The chase began with Hameed and Slater both finding boundaries within their first six balls, the latter’s being a superb cut shot.
However, the skipper edged a wide one to first slip and had to depart for 9 just four overs in.
Slater was joined by Jack Haynes at the crease as the pair scored briskly, moving Notts to 49/1 from the first ten overs which included Haynes scoring back-to-back fours with two sweet cover drives down the ground.
They added 58 for a second-wicket stand before Haynes edged the ball down the leg side which was caught well by a diving Brooke Guest for 35.
Sam Seecharan was caught on the boundary for 12, before Ben Slater made his way to another List A half-century in a competition he thrives in.
Slater and James continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over before two quick wickets saw Derbyshire regain their momentum.
James was the first to go for 12 before Slater was caught & bowled in tidy fashion for an accomplished 68 which included nine boundaries.
Tom Moores added a quick-fire 22 with some fine hitting before he was well caught by Guest behind the stumps.
Daniel Sams joined Joe Pocklington at the crease, the former striking a huge six which caused a delay while the ball was found behind the stand.
However, Sams could only add 16 before Rob Lord departed looking to find a maximum for 13.
With 15 overs remaining, Notts were 201/8, with Hutton and Hayes the last to fall as the visitors fell short.
