Matt Montgomery is operating with a team-first mentality as he bids to take a greater role in Notts Outlaws’ Vitality Blast campaign.
“I’ve been a bit of a utility player so far and I’ve been called upon when I’ve been needed in moments, but that’s sort of what I’m trying to do,” reflected Montgomery.
“I want to just add value wherever I can, whether it be with the bat, the ball, or in the field. For me, the team is the most important thing, but I’m enjoying it personally.”
The Outlaws head to Leicestershire Foxes tomorrow, Thursday 19 June, before travelling on to the table-topping Northamptonshire Steelbacks 24 hours later.
Montgomery has been named in a 14-strong squad for the former fixture following his involvement in a stellar chase to beat Bears at Edgbaston last weekend.
“I’m definitely still learning, but I’m really enjoying the challenge. I’d like to keep growing and getting better,” said Montgomery.
While he takes delight in his own performances and great heart from his desire to push further towards becoming a key player, the 25-year-old is thinking only about the team for now.
“It was no secret we had a bit of a lean run, so it was nice to turn it around on Saturday,” said an honest Montgomery.
“It was another great chase, and it was nice to see Tom and Lyndon bat nicely. I think we’re well aware of where we are, and we’re looking to go on a bit of a run.
“Hopefully we can carry that momentum forward after what was a really good chase on Saturday.”
The reccurring concept of momentum is one that Montgomery believes has tangible meaning as the Outlaws look to finish the first block of Blast action on a high.
“It’s a long T20 campaign, so we’ve been talking about, as a group, growing game on game. Hopefully we keep heading upwards,” he said.
“We want to finish this first block strongly, head into two four-dayers, and carry the momentum we’ve had in that format into the last block of T20s.
“Hopefully we can hit the ground running in these last two games, then after we’ve had a little break from it, we can come back strongly in the second block.”
