Farhan Ahmed’s figures of 2/41 from ten overs were unable to stop England Men U19s suffering a four-wicket defeat to West Indies in the first Youth One-Day International in Grenada.
In his first match as Young Lions captain, Ahmed claimed the wickets of Tyriek Bryan, caught by Manny Lumsden for 18 and Zachary Carter, lbw for 10, but the hosts overhauled England’s 242 with four balls to spare.
Joshua Dorne’s 90 was the backbone of the Windies’ successful chase, while Jonathan de Lange also contributed 52 in spite of Ahmed’s fellow spinner Jack Nelson taking 3/50.
Nelson had earlier cleared the rope three times in his 31 from 27 balls, while Joe Moores top-scored with an enterprising 59 from 45 balls and Caleb Falconer added 44.
With the ball, Nelson removed both Dorne and de Lange in the 47th over after they had built a 117-run fifth-wicket stand, but late hitting from Shaquan Belle steered West Indies home.
The second match of the seven-game series will be staged in Grenada on Wednesday.
