Fresh from hitting an instrumental fifty, Freddie McCann reflected on a fast-moving Rothesay County Championship contest between Worcestershire and Nottinghamshire.
Having struck 56 from 106 balls to help the Green and Golds to a slender but vital first-innings lead, McCann emphasised the importance of discipline and partnerships in challenging conditions.
“A lot of things have happened, and a lot of wickets have fallen,” said 20-year-old McCann. “The game is moving very quickly and in a game like that you have to value every run.
“You’ve just got to be on it every single ball because things can happen at any time. Wickets can fall in clusters so you just have to build partnerships where you can.
“There was still a lot in the pitch today, which you could see from the way we were bowling there at the end.”
With his latest half-century representing the fifth time he has passed fifty this season, the left-hander took a moment to express his pride in his performances during a productive first full campaign with the Nottinghamshire senior side.
“Batting-wise, I just tried to do my own thing and see how things went,” he explained. “I’m happy with the way [the season] is going at the moment.
“I would have liked to have kicked on and turned some of the fifties into hundreds, but I’ll take it at the moment.”
McCann also showcased his ability in the field with a gravity-defying grab in the slips off fellow Nottinghamshire native Lyndon James.
“I was pleased with the catch I took!” he said. “It was one of those where it just goes in and sticks. You do a lot of practice in the week and just hope that when it really matters it sticks.”
While James claimed two wickets in a rampant bowling performance late in the day, McCann reserved special praise for Josh Tongue.
“It’s unbelievable to have him back in the team!” he smiled. “We’re standing quite far back for him at the moment!
“Having someone of his pace and experience back in the side is brilliant and to field at second slip to him is amazing.”
“We’ve bowled really well throughout, and there’s an exciting day three coming up!”
