Bad light and rain took centre stage on Day Three to set up mouth-watering final day at the Oval where Notts lead by 249 runs.

On a day where only where only 26 overs were possible, Brett Hutton finished on 43* as he and the tailenders added 37 runs from the overnight total, setting Surrey 315 to win.

Rory Burns and Dom Sibley remained unbeaten for the 66 they added in 16 overs, meaning Notts will have to take all ten wickets on the final day for victory.

After bad light and rain meant there was no play in the morning session on, Brett Hutton (23*) and Josh Tongue (14*) looked to add to Notts’ 277-run lead.

They did exactly that, with Tongue playing a perfect cover drive for four shortly before falling for an important 22.

Hutton continued his attack and pushed Notts over the 250 mark, extending the lead to over 300 before Pennington was bowled for 8.

Hutton and Pennington immediately threatened the Surrey openers' outside edge as the hosts' second innings began, but it was Tongue who induced the first clear chance, Liam Patterson-White unable to capitalise in the cordon on this occasion.

Burns was the aggressor in the early exchanges, before the umpires called an early tea with the former England opener on 41* alongside fellow ex-international Sibley on 18*.

Despite inspections in the light throughout the evening session, the umpires deemed no further play was possible to see the table-topping clash head in to a final day.
