Josh Tongue returned a five-wicket haul with a supreme display of fast bowling as Nottinghamshire eked out a thrilling 20-run victory over Surrey at the Kia Oval.

In a result that could strike a decisive blow to the outcome of this season’s Division One title, Tongue returned 5/100 as the hosts, chasing 315, were dismissed for 294.

Lyndon James claimed two further scalps, while there was one apiece for Brett Hutton, Dillon Pennington, and Liam Patterson-White.

The result puts Notts, who became the first away side to win a red-ball match at the Oval in more than two years, 14 points clear at the summit with just one game to go.
