Lord recorded standout figures of 6/40 from his 14 overs, luring Charlie Tear, Dan Ibrahim and Danny Lamb into edging behind, before trapping Toby Munt, Troy Henry and Nantes Oosthuizen lbw.
There were two wickets apiece for Francis Moore and James Hayes as Sussex were dismissed for 148 inside 49 overs, trailing by 198.
In reply, Sam Seecharan made 81 and Farhan Ahmed 42 as Notts made 203/8dec in their second innings.
Set 402 for victory, the hosts reached 17/0 at stumps.
