Notts Outlaws chased down a victory target of 299 to defeat Surrey at The Kia Oval and progress through to the knock-out phase of the Metro Bank One Day Cup competition.

After restricting the home side to 298 for eight from their 50 overs the visitors were powered to a 6-wicket win, thanks to a century from George Munsey and half centuries from both Haseeb Hameed and Kyle Verreynne.

Munsey, who had played two matches earlier in the competition, returned at short notice to bolster the Notts batting order and delivered a near-flawless performance in making 138 from 132 balls, with 11 fours and four sixes.

The Scottish international, playing his first match at the ground, shared a stand of 109 with Hameed and another of 119 Verreynne, before falling to a catch in the deep with the finishing line in sight.

“I really wanted to score a hundred for Notts,” said the 33-year old. “But I didn’t think I’d get the chance in the 50 over competition but I’m delighted to get over the line and get one today.”

Munsey was quick to praise the effort of the bowlers, who fought back strongly in the second half of Surrey’s innings.

“I thought we were a little unlucky up top with the ball. Ledge (Brett Hutton) beat the bat 10 or 15 times without getting a wicket but then after the 30 over mark Dill (Dillon Pennington) came in and kept picking up wickets."

A target of almost 300 was always likely to be tricky and for Munsey, the challenge was a new one in every sense.

“I’ve never played here before, although I once came and got injured in the warm-up so had to sit it out, so to do that today was particularly pleasing.

"There was a bit in it for the seamers and they kept me on my toes and the spinners bowled a really good length, so forced my hand to sweep a bit more than I normally would have.

“I feel like I’m batting well at the moment and am so grateful for Scotland for allowing me to play.

"They didn’t have to but we’ve already qualified for the next stage of the World Cup, so they supported me in playing here after I got the call.

“I’m also available for Friday and unlike today, I have played at York before, a club match for The Grange a few years ago.”
