Tom Banton smashed 67 runs off 32 balls but was unable to help Trent Rockets make history in The Hundred as Birmingham Phoenix won a high-scoring thriller by 10 runs at Edgbaston.

A big-hitting display from the hosts propelled them to an enormous 214 for four, and despite Banton's blistering effort, the Rockets could only muster 204 for seven in reply.

Rockets openers Ben Duckett and Finn Allen smashed 54 runs while batting together and made a strong effort to start the chase.

Even when Allen was out, Duckett continued to push on, only for Currie to produce a high-quality ball that saw the England opener caught by wicketkeeper Joe Clarke.

With both openers perishing just shy of fifty, the Rockets lost momentum in the middle of their innings.

Usman Tariq deployed the full range of his bowling deliveries to keep the Rockets in check, with the dismissal of the dangerous Tim David the key moment as their chase ran aground, and not even the brilliance of Banton was enough to get it done.

For the Phoenix earlier, Clarke and Will Smeed had smashed 54 runs off the first 25 balls, and both registered fifties, with Clarke’s 33-ball 68, featuring seven fours and four sixes, being especially quick.

After he was out with the score on 104, Rehan Ahmed stepped up to strike five sixes himself, either side of a six-filled cameo from the skipper Donovan Ferreira, whose nine-ball stay included three big maximums.

Calvin Harrison was the Rockets' best bowler, conceding just 27 runs from his 20 balls, and picking up two wickets.

Harrison also struck the final two balls of the Rockets' innings for six to finish with a personal strike rate of 600. It was that kind of match.
