Notts Outlaws fell to their first defeat of the Metro Bank One Day Cup campaign by 31 runs despite a defiant display from Kyle Verreynne.

Farhan Ahmed and Liam Patterson-White took three wickets apiece in Lancashire's innings as the visitors reduced Lancashire from 84-1 to 220 all out.

But batting remained tricky throughout the chase, and the hosts secured success despite South Africa international Verreynne's 61.

After skipper Haseeb Hameed won the toss and opted to bowl first, James Hayes made a quick breakthrough, finding Matty Hurst’s outside edge on its way through to Kyle Verreynne.

Despite the early wicket, Lancashire were scoring quickly through Keaton Jennings and Josh Bohannon.

Lyndon James' economical spell brought rewards, removing Matty Hurst after a great take in the deep by George Munsey.

It would trigger a tremendous fight-back from Notts’ spin attack as Lancashire fell from 84-1 to 98-5.

Farhan Ahmed removed Jennings for 37 as the ex-England opener chipped the ball up to Freddie McCann, before taking two wickets in an over with a brilliant caught and bowled seeing off Harris and an off-spinner’s perfect delivery bowling Rocky Flintoff.

The spin attack was clearly working as Liam Patterson-White took his first wicket of the One Day Cup campaign in his second over, removing Moores, who was looking to attack, as he found Ben Martindale on the boundary.

Freddie McCann then struck with just his second ball as Balderson found Patterson-White, meaning from 40 overs, Lancashire were 157/7.

Arav Shetty started a fightback as he passed 50 in a good partnership with Blatherwick until the half-centurion’s resistance was broken by Patterson-White.

The spinner would pick up his third and final wicket in the 49th over, removing Bailey who added a quick-fire 17 alongside Blatherwick, who fell to Hayes four balls later as Lancashire were bowled out for 220.

Looking to make it another successful chase, Notts were dealt an early blow as Freddie McCann fell in the first over to an outside edge.

Ben Martindale and George Munsey cracked on smartly though, punishing any loose deliveries and adding 52 for the second wicket.

Martindale was trapped LBW by Shetty for 23, before George Balderson bowled Haseeb Hameed with a delivery that stayed low and Munsey (37) was bowled looking to reverse sweep.

James found Bohannon at backward point, but an important partnership from Verreynne and Patterson-White began to shift the momentum back in favour of the Outlaws.

The pair scored briskly to move past a fifty partnership and take to within 80 runs of their target.

However, a breakthrough from Shetty, who managed to sneak one through Patterson-White’s defences, meant he had to depart for a well-played 39 before Farhan Ahmed was bowled two overs later.

With ten overs left, Outlaws were 154/7 but still had Kyle Verranyye at the crease, who moved to his half-century with five overs remaining and Notts still needing another 38 runs.

With the run-rate necessitating an attacking approach, Blatherwick accounted for debutant Sam Wood and Brett Hutton, before Verreynne was the last man to fall.
