Liam Patterson-White claimed a further three wickets to finish with match figures of 9/109 as Nottinghamshire completed a dominant three-day win over Essex by an innings and 52 runs at the Ambassador Cruise Line Ground.
Fergus O’Neill also took a second-innings 5/39, while there was one apiece for Olly Stone and Lyndon James as Notts completed victory after tea despite 56 from Charlie Allison.
With Notts’ tails up, O’Neill wasted no time in picking up where he left off from the second evening by removing nightwatcher Charlie Bennett, caught at point for five by Ben Slater.
Although Dean Elgar and Tom Westley shut up shop following that, managing to see Essex through to drinks at midday, the former became the second wicket of the day to fall just 20 minutes later.
Stone was the man to get the former South Africa captain, rapped on the knee roll and given lbw without hesitation for 42.
There was time enough before lunch for the reintroduction of Patterson-White to spark Westley’s dismissal too, with the Essex skipper caught at first slip by Freddie McCann for 19.
That meant Essex took lunch on 81-5, still 192 in arrears, and Matt Critchley failed to last any more than half an hour once play resumed, nicking Patterson-White behind to Verreynne for 13.
There was a little resistance for much of the remainder of the afternoon from Allison and Luc Benkenstein, who added 65 for the seventh wicket, but the tide decisively turned before tea.
Allison was pinned lbw to give Patterson-White a third of the innings and ninth of the match, and Michael Pepper then lasted just seven balls for a duck as he nicked James to McCann.
That left Essex taking tea on 181-8, a far less rosy position than they had been in just five overs before, and following the taking of the new ball after tea, Luc Benkenstein perished for 42.
It was the reintroduction of O’Neill, in sync with that new ball, that did for Essex, as, with the fresh cherry in hand, he then completed his five to sign off from his latest Championship spell in style.
