Mordecai Sherwin was one of Notts’ great characters who played 206 First-Class matches for his home county between 1876 and 1896. The first Notts wicket keeper to take 50 dismissals in a season, he captained the county in 1887 and 1888, and was a Wisden ‘Cricketer of the Year’ in 1891.
He also umpired 117 First-Class matches (including one Test match in 1899) and played 20 matches as goalkeeper for Notts County FC.
A large oil painting of Sherwin hung in the Long Room for many years, but it’s now in need of some serious attention. Paint is flaking off the canvas in some areas, and years of dirt and nicotine stains need removing.
2026 marks the 175th anniversary of Sherwin’s birth, and the 150th anniversary of his First-Class debut. Could you help to celebrate these anniversaries by supporting the Mordecai Sherwin Portrait Appeal?
£2,200 is needed urgently to restore the painting to its former glory, so donations of any amount are most welcome.
And to say ‘Thank You’ ….
- Donors of £20 or more (in a single donation) will be gratefully acknowledged alongside the portrait when it is initially re-displayed at Trent Bridge
- Donors of £50 or more (in a single donation) will be invited to an exclusive ‘unveiling’ of the portrait on its return to Trent Bridge, including light refreshments and illustrated presentations about Mordecai Sherwin and the conservation of the painting
