Emma Jones enjoyed the ability to take responsibility in The Blaze’s win over Somerset at Trent Bridge, with the side within one point of sealing qualification straight through to the Metro Bank One Day Cup Final.

Jones is part of a 14-strong squad to travel to Southampton to take on second-placed Hampshire (10.30am start).

The Blaze are five points clear of Hampshire with two games to play – and with Hampshire having just one match remaining, simply avoiding a bonus-point defeat will be sufficient to guarantee top spot in the group stages.

Jones has enjoyed a fruitful first summer with the side, playing a key role in two trophy wins so far – but she enjoyed the opportunity to craft a match-winning partnership of 88 with Sarah Bryce on Sunday.

“You want to take full responsibility when it's your moment,” she said.

“You don't always get the opportunity, so when it comes you want to make sure you take it.

“Craig [Cumming, Head Coach] talks about carrying your bat, and Sarah and I both talked about being out there at the end.

“It was nice that we could finish the group stages at Trent Bridge on a high, it’s a really special ground.

“We always get great support and like it's just really cool to be able to call this place home.”

Hampshire are the only side within 20 points of The Blaze in the group-stage table, so Jones knows her side will need to perform across all facets of the game – including in the field, where she felt there was room for improvement on Sunday.

“We talked about that innings being a mixed bag for us, a few dropped catches, a few fumbles here and there, but also some really good moments like Sarah's [Bryce] catch.

“Fielding is something we always work hard on, and we know if we save ourselves 20 runs out there, that’s going to make such a big difference at the end of the day.

“We'll keep working hard at it and hopefully we can put in even better performance next time.”

Bryce and Jones both made their first 50-over fifties of the season on Sunday, and Jones feels the pair dovetailed well.

“I've not batted with Sarah Bryce in a while, and she's one of my favourite people to bat with,” she said.

“I think we're very different players in terms of where we hit, so tactically that works really well.

“And she's just such a calm human being compared to me; I’m a little bit more excitable, so she keeps me grounded and keeps me in the moment.”
