After thirteen years with his native Yorkshire, Metcalfe was released at the close of the 1995 season and joined Nottinghamshire for 1996.

To that date he had scored over 10,000 runs with 25 centuries. He had by coincidence hit a century on his debut v Notts and in 1986 was elected to Young Cricketer of the Year. In 1990 he exceeded 2,000 runs and with Martyn Moxon gave Yorkshire a very dependable pair of opening bats.

However in 1993 he lost his place in the Yorkshire side and in 1994 and 1995 only appeared intermittently. During his summer with Notts he played in 29 first eleven games and betted consistently, but last summer he was unable to keep a regular place in the side.
