Born in Ashington, Northumberland on 31 December 1991, Ben Thomas McGuire was a left-handed batsman and right-arm medium pace bowler. He was educated at St John Fisher Catholic High School and Newcastle College in Newcastle-under-Lyme and represented Staffordshire at cricket through all the age group sides.

He played in a couple of Second XI Championship matches for Notts Seconds in 2008 and joined the Notts Cricket Academy in 2009. The Academy won the Bassetlaw League that season with McGuire making an excellent contribution, scoring 727 runs @66.09 and taking 22 wickets @17.68. In the same summer, he made eight appearances for Notts Seconds.

On the very last day of season, McGuire was selected to make his Notts first-team debut in a 40-over League encounter versus Gloucestershire on 27 September 2009. The match saw Notts register their current lowest ever List-A innings total, being bowled out for 57. McGuire batting at nine was bowled by David Payne for a five-ball duck and did not bowl. McGuire, after appearing for the Notts Academy in the first two games of 2010, decided to leave. He made appearances for Worcestershire Second XI in 2011 and Derbyshire Second XI in 2012.

Between 2009 and 2016, McGuire appeared in 20 Minor Counties Championship. 27 Minor Counties Trophy and 1 Minor Counties T20 matches for Staffordshire. In the championship he scored 714 runs @23.03 with a top score of 107 not out versus Cumberland at Kendal in 2015.  

He has played club cricket for Knypersley (2010), Hem Heath (2011-2012) and JG Meakin (2013-19) in the North Staffordshire and South Cheshire League.
