Ernest George Allen, a right-hand bat, was for some years the leading batsman for Worksop CC, which club he also captained for two seasons. Born in Worksop on 24 June 1880, he was educated at Lancing College, but did not play in the First XI. In August 1900 he represented County Colts v City Colts at Trent Bridge and in July 1902, Amateurs v Professionals at Trent Bridge. In the later match he carried his bat through the Amateurs completed innings for 78 not out. His two appearances in First-Class cricket, both in 1903, were Notts v Gentleman of Philadelphia at Trent Bridge, scoring 19 and 10, and v Essex at Leyton, scoring 19.

Allen was a director of Worksop and Retford Brewery and secretary from 1909 to 1913 and then resided in Sheffield and Harrogate. He died, aged 62 years, on 28 May 1943 in Harrogate.
