Born in Eastwood on 6 November 1920, Smithurst was a left hand bat and slow left arm bowler who had a trial for Notts in 1938. His sole First-Class match was Nottinghamshire versus Gloucestershire at Trent Bridge on 18, 20 and 21 May 1946 when he scored 0 and 1 and bowled 0-26 and 0-22 as the visitors won by eight wickets.

He played in a handful of other games, including a war-time friendly v Leicestershire in July 1945, and made his highest recorded score, 29,  for Leicestershire Club & Ground v Northants Club & Ground in August 1947, in which game he also took three wickets.

He died on 26 January 1982 in Giltbrook, aged 61.
