He played for Worksop Town CC from 1931 as a right-hand opening batsman and joined the playing staff at Trent Bridge in 1934. At the same time he was a professional footballer, being right-half for Bury. He remained with Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club until the outbreak of the war.

He made 24 appearances for the County, scoring 594 runs at an average of 18.00. The only season in which he held a regular place in the First XI was 1938, when he played in 16 matches. His highest score was 60 v Worcestershire during that season, but his best innings, early in 1938 was 58 v Lancashire.

He died in 1999 in Middleton, Lancashire.
