Born at 9, Castle Street, Nottingham on 24 March 1910, Rhodes was educated at Dean Close School, being in the XI for four years and captain in his final season.

A right-hand batsman, medium pace bowler and excellent close to the wicket fielder he was chiefly associated with Sir Julien Cahn's XI.

He made his debut for Cahn's side in 1928 and appeared in many matches with the team until 1939. He hit 8,194 runs, including 18 centuries, the most important of which were 117 against Bedfordshire in 1932,  110 versus Bedfordshire in 1931, 108 versus Staffordshire in 1934 and 107 versus Nottinghamshire C & G in 1934.

Rhodes made four overseas tours with Cahn's XI to Argentina in 1930, Denmark in 1932, USA in 1933 and Ceylon and Malaya in 1937.

His First-Class debut came for Nottinghamshire v Hampshire at Trent Bridge on July 2nd 1930, coming into the side for A W Carr, who was absent due to his wife's illness. He made a splendid impression hitting 68no without an error in 110 minutes with 2 sixes and 7 fours. His only other Nottinghamshire match of 1930 was versus Australia when he again revealed decided batting ability.

Of the five Nottinghamshire matches he appeared in in 1931, the game against Middlesex at Trent Bridge was his best, he scored 70 with 12 fours in the first innings and 37no in the second, opening the batting with Keeton and putting on 74 in 55 minutes.

In the ordinary course of events, Rhode's First -Class career with Nottinghamshire should have ended in 1931, for he was not seen in the side for any of the next three seasons. The sacking of A W Carr in 1934 put the Nottinghamshire Committee into a quandary. Heane had been spoken of as a likely successor, but he was very inexperienced in county cricket, so the committee took an unprecedented step in Nottinghamshire cricket history of appointing two captains, one of them Stuart Rhodes. He therefore reappeared in the team for the first game of 1935, opening the batting with Charlie Harris.

During the season he played in 12 Nottinghamshire matches altogether, but never found his true batting form and his final match for Nottinghamshire was versus Essex at Trent Bridge on August 28th-30th, 1935.

He played 19 first-class matches for Nottinghamshire, scoring 452 runs, making 2 50s at an average of 22.60.

His final-first class match was for Cahn's XI v Ceylon at Colombo in March 1937. In 1946 he played in a few matches for Hertfordshire and hit one score of 112, averaging 30.11 in 9 innings. His club cricket in the post war years was for Harpenden, whom he captained. A good hockey player he represented Nottinghamshire at left back in 1929/30.

His father G A Rhodes was on the Nottinghamshire Committee from 1925 to 1951.

Stuart Rhodes died on 7 January 1989 in Stamford, Lincolnshire.
