The year 1839 was another quiet one for the Nottingham club, the single match of any consequence being against the 14 of the Rancliffe Arms Club at Trent Bridge – the Rancliffe Arms being a well-known cricketing inn in Bunny, seven miles south of Nottingham. John Buttery appeared for the Rancliffe side in this game and subsequently appeared three times for Notts.
