Michael Lumb, guesting for a Lincolnshire Development XI, hit a timely fifty to help his adopted to 317-8 declared at the end of day one.

With Lumb joined by Brendan Taylor in the Lincolnshire side, the pair would have been relishing the chance to face Nottinghamshire’s Luke Wood, Brett Hutton and Will Gidman in the first innings.

However, Taylor couldn’t negotiate the opening over from Wood (2-32), caught behind without scoring by Tom Moores.

The morning session was then curtailed by rain on a couple of occasions, the hosts going to the break on 44-1, Lumb unbeaten on 21.

The left-hander wasn’t affected by the stop start nature of the morning though, moving swiftly to 72 in the afternoon session before falling victim to the bowling of Brett Hutton.

Lincolnshire captain Dan Freeman and Dominic Brown, two players who have had experience with Nottinghamshire’s Seconds in the past, carried on where Lumb left off, both posting half centuries.

The rest of the headlines on day one belonged to Sam Wood, the all-rounder coming off the back of a fine start in the Championship where he scored a century and took three wickets.

The off-spinner removed both Freeman (55) and Brown (94) before adding Ben Powell (18) late on in the day, to finish with figures of 3-59 from 14 overs.

Matt Roberts (19*) and Jamie Brumby (5*) then guided the hosts to close without any further loss with the Seconds to take on batting duties on the second day.
