Man of the match Ben Stokes praised the never-say-die attitude of this England team after bowling his country to a 22-run victory on the fifth morning in Chittagong.

The Durham all-rounder took both wickets on the final day to go with his impressive 4-26 from the first innings, and his critical 85 with the bat.

Stokes took both wickets as England wrapped up the first Test match in just three overs on the final morning.

“We always believe we can win from any situation,” Stokes said afterwards.

“The never give up attitude that has surrounded us the last 18 months has been brilliant to be part of. We always think we’re going to win and just keep doing it.

“We face a tough series when we go to India next month, let’s hope we repeat our ability to counteract the opposition when we go there and give them a real test.”

Both teams went into the final day poised for victory. Bangladesh, who began on 253-8, needed 33 runs to win a Test against England for the first time – the tourists needed two wickets.

Taijul Islam was first to go as a delivery that, on first glance, appeared to be heading down the leg-side transpired to provide a moment of jubilation for Alastair Cook’s men.

The latest in a long line of successful reviews saw the Bangladesh number ten removed for a gutsy 16.

Victory was wrapped up just two balls later as England’s man of the moment trapped Shaiful Islam in front of the stumps for a duck.

The margin of defeat was the narrowest in the Tigers’ Test history, surpassing the 77-run margin held by West Indies from their victory in Mirpur in 2012.

Afterwards, England’s captain paid tribute to the man of the match and explained his decision to begin the day with a seam combination – despite the earlier spin dominance seen in the match.

“He’s tough to captain is but I wouldn’t like it any other way,” said Cook. "He is a brilliant cricketer. His type doesn’t come along too often.

“He allows us to have an extra seamer – he is the extra seamer – he’s got such a big heart and that’s why I wanted to throw him the ball this morning.

“We have three seamers and I fancy Ben, Chris (Woakes) and Broady to do the job.

“It really was an excellent Test match, just a shame someone eventually had to lose.”

The two teams will begin the second Test match in Dhaka on Friday.
