Nottinghamshire’s Jake Ball will play for England in the first Ashes Test against Australia, the tourists have confirmed.

The 26-year-old seamer has recovered from ankle ligament damage and been selected ahead of Somerset’s Craig Overton, who played in England’s final warm-up game.

Also selected to face the Aussies at the Gabba in Brisbane is fellow Trent Bridge bowler Stuart Broad, who will lead the attack along with Jimmy Anderson.

It will be a 110th Test cap for the son of former England batsman Chris, who made three centuries in England’s 1987-87 series win down under.

Ball, meanwhile, will win his fourth cap, having last played a Test in Chennai against India last December.
