Nottinghamshire CCC enjoyed a highly successful Nottingham Post Sports Awards last night (Thursday) as they won in three categories.

Batsman Alex Hales beat off competition from para-athlete Richard Whitehead and badminton player Chris Adcock to carry off the Sportsman of the Year prize.

Cricket Player of the Year was named as the PCA’s MVP for 2017, all-rounder Samit Patel, who pipped fellow Notts teammates Steven Mullaney and Hales.

And the Club also scooped the Team of the Year award ahead of the Nottingham Panthers ice hockey team and and motorsport pairing, the Birchall brothers.

Peter Moores was named as a finalist in the Coach of the Year award, but missed out to the Panthers’ Corey Neilson in a strong category that also saw Notts County manager Kevin Nolan make the top three.

The Club’s Head Coach was joined in picking up the Team of the Year award by Mullaney, Matt Carter and Ben Kitt.

On winning that award, Moores said: “Winning Team of the Year is something we should be very proud of because it’s been a great season in 2017.

“The credit has to go to the players because to win two white ball trophies in the same season was some achievement." Peter Moores

“There was some strong competition that we were up against, particularly the Panthers, who have had a fantastic year so far.

“The credit has to go to the players because to win two white ball trophies (The NatWest T20 Blast and The Royal London One-Day Cup) in the same season was some achievement.

“I don’t think anyone has ever won the 20-over and 50-over competition (since it changed from 40 overs), where there is such a difference between the two formats. To then also be able to compete and win promotion alongside that is a phenomenal feat.”

The event was held at the East Midlands Conference Centre on the University of Nottingham campus, with former Notts players Tim Robinson and Basher Hassan among those in attendance.
