Alex Hales hit 45 off 39 balls as he got the better of Notts Outlaws teammate Ish Sodhi when the two made their respective Indian Premier League debuts.

Both men will play be at Trent Bridge this summer to help the Outlaws defend their T20 crown in the Vitality Blast competition.

But they lined up against each other – Hales for Sunrisers Hyderabad and New Zealander Sodhi for the Rajasthan Royals – in Jaipur.

Hales finally got his chance after sitting out the Sunrisers’ first seven games of the tournament – and did not disappoint.

He shared a 92-run stand with number three Kane Willamson (63), hitting four boundaries, to set up Hyderabad’s 151-7 off their 20 overs.

Sodhi finished with figures of 1-25 off three overs, eventually claiming the prized wicket of Williamson, stumped by Jos Buttler.

In reply, Rajasthan’s Ajinka Rahane (65 not out) and Sanju Samson (40) began well, but the Hydeabad attack, led by Siddarth Kaul, who took 2-23, pegged things back and the Royals came up 12 runs short of victory on 140-6.

Hyderabad are now top of the Indian Premier League table with six wins and two defeats as a result of their latest success.
