Ben Stokes and Joe Root returned to the England side but Alex Hales was left out as England lost the first one-day international of the series against New Zealand in Hamilton.

Root made 71 and put on 79 for the second wicket with Jason Roy, who struck 49, as the tourists batted first.

Jos Buttler then hit 79 from 84 balls with five fours and five sixes before he was run out by Tim Southee to help England up to 287-7, with all-rounder Stokes making 12 in his first international match since September.

In reply, New Zealand were quickly reduced to 27-3 as Chris Woakes (2-47) enjoyed early success.

But Ross Taylor then hammered 113 from 116 balls, with 12 fours, and Tom Latham 79 from 84 to get the hosts’ run chase back on track.

The pair put on 178 before Mitch Santner delivered the knockout blow with 45 not out off just 27 balls with two fours and four sixes, guiding the Kiwis to 287-7 and victory with four balls to spare.

The second match of the series takes place in Tauranga on Wednesday.
