England’s Jonny Bairstow stands on the cusp of a fifth Test century after rescuing England from another embarrassing day with the bat against New Zealand.

Having been dismissed for just 58 in the first Test at Auckland, the tourists were again in real trouble at 94-5 and 164-7 at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

But Bairstow (97 not out) then came together with Mark Wood (52) to add 97 in 18 overs to drag England back into the game.

The Yorkshire right hander hit 11 fours and one six from 154 balls and, in tandem with debutant Jack Leach (10 not out), put on a further 31 as England closed on 290-8.

Earlier, the visitors’ top and middle order had again struggled to cope with the bowling of Trent Boult (3-79) and Tim Southee (5-60) as only captain Joe Root (37) and Mark Stoneman (35) got going.
