Matt Carter took 4-22 and Ben Kitt 3-22 as Nottinghamshire’s seconds completed a six-wicket Second XI Trophy success at Dunstable Cricket Club.

The visitors asked Northants to bat first and Matt Milnes made an early breakthrough, having captain Ricardo Vascancelos caught by Will Root at first slip for a duck from only his fourth delivery.

Ewan Cox (29) and Saif Zaib (38) then put on 70 for the second wicket before the former fell to a great catch at full stretch by keeper Tom Keast off Kitt’s bowling.

Zaib followed soon after as he was stumped by Keast off Carter before the same combination, albeit caught this time, accounted for Charlie Thurston (16), making the score 102-4.

Luke Bartier (10) drove Carter straight to Jack Blatherwick at mid-on, while Graeme White (17) was bowled by Root and Joseph Kendall (10) gave Keast a fourth dismissal and a third from Carter’s bowling.

As Northants continued to lose wicket regularly, Ben Cotton (1) was bowled by Jack Blatherwick and Mesim Zaidi (2) suffered the same fate at the hands of Kitt, who then also castled last man Gareth Wade (10), leaving the hosts 165 all out.

The Nottinghamshire reply began well enough, but Solomon Budinger (16) was caught at long off by Saif Zaib off the bowling of Gareth Wade with the total on 28.

A stand of 73 for the second wicket between Will Fraine (58) and Billy Root (48) then carried the visitors a long way towards securing victory.

Fraine brought up the Notts 100 with a six and hit one other maximum and six fours in his 65-ball knock before he was second out, caught by keeper Kendall off the Bartier’s bowling.

Root faced 55 balls and hit four boundaries before he fell two short of his fifty as he was held at long off by White, with Wade the bowler and the total on 147-3.

Kamau Leverock came and went quickly as he was pinned lbw by Zaidi, but there were no further alarms for Notts as a single from Carter (9 not out) completed victory in the 33rd over after he had joined forces with Chris Gibson (30 not out).
