The number of venues offering cricket sessions tailored to young people with disabilities in Nottinghamshire has doubled, after two new locations launched a series of activities.

Keyworth Leisure Centre and the Monty Hind Youth Club in Nottingham have become the latest to host Super 1s sessions, bringing the inititative to the city centre and the south of the county for the first time.

The classes have been launched following the success of weekly sessions at Portland College near Mansfield Ashfield and at the Newark Academy.

“The World Cup win and the Ashes have meant there’s a lot of hype around cricket at the minute, so it’s been a perfect time to introduce the sport to our learners,” said Zak Day of Portland College.

“The sessions help our learners to engage with the sport at their own pace, but what’s most important is how it helps them in their everyday lives.

“It improves their communication skills, their ability to form relationships, and their ability to understand turn-taking.

“I’ve seen a massive improvement in some of our attendees this year; they’ve really grown up, and that’s what sport does for people.

“As a former Portland College student, I know that sport really does help people to develop – it can be a lifeline.”

The free sessions are open to young people aged between 14 and 25, and aim to give attendees the confidence to transition into cricket clubs near them.

“Super 1s offers another opportunity for local young people with disabilities to access sport and physical activity and receive professional coaching in a safe, fun and inclusive setting,” said Dave Long, Inclusion and Engagement Officer for Active 4 Today in Newark.

“I hope that it is just the start of a long term future for disability cricket in the Newark & Sherwood District.”

  • Monty Hind Youth Club, Nottingham NG7 2LX - Tuesdays 6-7pm (12-25 years)
