Lancashire v Nottinghamshire:

Nottinghamshire 268-2 (Duckett 116, Slater 111*). No play possible on day two.

A lot has been made these past few months of patience being a virtue.

COVID-19 caused a two-month delay to the English international season, a four-month one to the domestic calendar.

It was long enough for Captain Tom Moore to walk a hundred laps of his garden, raise £30 million, be made a Colonel and a Sir, and to record a promotion for the BBC’s cricket coverage preaching the positives of being made to wait for something you love.

None of that, though, made the second day of Lancashire v Nottinghamshire any more palatable.

Leaden skies, a delayed start, an early lunch, inspections planned then scuppered – it is a dance that county cricket watchers relish the least.

At 4.30pm, with the drizzle, mizzle and murk unrelenting, the umpires made the decision to abandon play for the day.

Nottinghamshire will begin the third day on 268-2. Ben Slater, some 48 hours after he strode out to commence his innings, is set to resume once more at 11am on Monday.

In truth, however, both Lancashire and the elements are now equally formidable foes in this contest.
