Nottinghamshire are saddened to report the passing of John Springall, who played for the county for eight summers in the late 1950s and early 1960s, at the age of 87.

Springall, a right-hand batsman who also bowled medium pace and occasionally kept wicket, enjoyed his greatest spell in the 1959 and 1960 seasons, scoring in excess of 1,000 runs in each campaign.

Surrey-born Springall was awarded his county cap in 1960, before his first-class career at Trent Bridge came to an end in 1963.

In total, the all-rounder played in 121 first-class fixtures, scoring 5,176 runs and taking 80 wickets, before returning to Notts for a solitary List A appearance in 1967.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.
