Notts leading wicket taker Chappell (3-75) and Ball (1-56) reduced the visitors, who won the toss and elected to bat first, to 66-4 early on in proceedings.
Gareth Harte and Stuart Poynter shared in a century stand to rebuild for Durham, but Carter stuck to his task to pick up three wickets in an economical 26 overs on the first day.
