Toby Pettman secured a five-wicket haul but Notts Second XI were forced to work for their rewards on an attritional second day of the Second Eleven Championship fixture against Derbyshire at Lady Bay, as centuries from Luis Reece and Alex Hughes carried the visitors to 336 in response to the Green and Golds’ first-innings 282.

Resuming on 32-2, Nottinghamshire made their first inroads of the day with the wicket of Matt Critchley in the 12th over of the day, caught by Compton at first slip off the bowling of Pettman, but the arrival of Hughes stimulated the stubborn stand Derbyshire required to swing the momentum.

Hughes and Reece repelled the Notts attack, and it wasn’t until midway through the afternoon session that the hosts were able to find a way through the defences of the pair, Reece rapped on the pad by Liam Patterson-White in front of the stumps.

Hughes received support from the middle-order, though, who offered stability as he counter-attacked. Brooke Guest survived 46 balls for his two runs, eventually caught behind off Pettman, before the wickets of Alex Thomson and Mattie McKiernan both fell to the seamer to give him his fourth and fifth dismissals.

Sam Conners hoisted the visitors north of 300 along with Hughes, who brought up his century off 180 deliveries, before Hutton had the latter caught by Compton at first slip for 136, the ninth-wicket pair then adding nine before the close.
