Nottinghamshire fell victim to some impressive bowling from Yorkshire in their Second XI Championship fixture as 17 wickets went on a frenzied day two in York.

The home side added 150 for their final five wickets before Notts made steady start to their reply, but the Green and Golds lost the bulk of the batting order in hasty fashion and took to the field again in the evening session with Yorkshire 208 runs ahead at the close of play.

Resuming day two on 162 for five, Ben Birkhead and Tom Loten made good progress for the hosts in the morning session.

It wasn’t until Yorkshire’s 90th over, the 33rd of the day, that Notts made the breakthrough, when Zak Chappell elicited some extra bounce from the York pitch and Ben Birkhead could only fend to Matt Carter at first slip to leave the score 223 for six.

Notts only had to wait 11 balls for their next dismissal, though, when a Toby Pettmen delivery straightened to find the edge of Will Luxon’s bat and Ben Compton did the honours at second slip.

The home side weren’t, however, inclined to roll over, and despite Mat Pillans being caught off Joey Evison by a stretching Carter in the cordon, they continued to score steadily.

Josh Sullivan added 13 before edging Evison to Calvin Harrison at third slip playing away from his body, before Loten himself was finally dismissed in the 110th over when he skied a pull shot off James Hayes, caught by Compton eight short of his century with Yorkshire on 296.

Matthew Montgomery fell early in reply, the same way Loten had fallen, this time Pillans the short ball architect and Luxton the catcher at mid-wicket.

Evison strode to the crease and joined Compton for 19 overs, taking the score to 54 before he departed for an attritional 26 from 65 deliveries having been trapped leg before by a Matt Waite delivery.

Again, the ensuing overs saw a steadying of the ship for Notts when Sol Budinger joined Compton, the former going at over a run-a-ball, helped by three consecutive fours from a Matt Revis over.

Yorkshire had their revenge though, and it was Waite again who did the damage.

The seamer angled a delivery across the left-handed Budinger who edged to Will Fraine at first slip, before dismissing Hutton two overs later. The Notts captain attempted to turn to the leg side but was through the shot too early and the leading edge was caught by Mukkerjee at point.

It sparked a collapse for Notts who lost three wickets in three balls with 103 runs on the board.

Harrison flashed at the final ball of the 36th over but could only top edge Hill through to Fraine for his second catch of the day.

Then, Pillans got the prized wicket, that of Compton two shy of his 50, adjudged lbw before Carter was dismissed in the same way to the next ball.

Pettmann left an over later, feathering Hill through to Birkhead, and the same fate befell James Hayes soon after, the right-hander edging to Hill, now positioned at second slip, to leave Notts 109-9.

Dane Schadendorf combined with Tom Barber to add 11 before the innings was wrapped up, Mukherjee bowling Barber for his first of the game.

With 15 wickets already falling through the day, there was still time for Nottinghamshire to up the tally before the close of play.

There were 14 runs on the board for the hosts, when Pettman dismissed Fraine for the second time in the day. The opener drove at a wide delivery but could only find Budinger at point.

Six balls later, both Yorkshire openers were back in the pavilion. Tom Barber did the damage this time, the left-armer swinging a quick delivery back through the gate of  James Wharton.

The home side saw out the final three overs to bring to close a frenetic day in the ascendency, with eight wickets remaining and a hefty lead.
