Haseeb Hameed and Ben Slater combined for an unbroken opening stand of 167 to guide Nottinghamshire to a ten-wicket victory over local rivals Derbyshire in their LV= County Championship clash at Trent Bridge.

Hameed amassed 93* in a free-flowing exhibition of hitting, and Slater provided seamless support against his former side with his own knock of 64* as Notts overhauled their target shortly before 1:30pm.

Having resumed on 3/0, requiring another 162 for victory, the odds were already in the hosts’ favour, and the openers made no mistake in a chanceless two-and-a-quarter hours as the Green and Golds cantered to victory.

A watchful start quickly gave way to a breezy display, as runs were scored with regularity across all areas of the Trent Bridge turf, and the pair brought up their half-century stand inside 12 overs as Slater drove for two.

Alex Thomson provided a little respite for Derbyshire with five maidens, and Wayne Madsen was their most economical bowler, but neither had much impact on the overall onslaught.

Having reached his fifty from 61 balls, Hameed then pressed the accelerator even further to crunch two maximums, adding to his 12 fours.

Poetically, it proved to be Slater, who played 59 first-class matches for Derbyshire, who wrote the conclusion, as the morning session was extended and he reached his own fifty from 108 balls.

He then finished proceedings off in style with a classically-driven four off Leus du Plooy’s third over to take the Green and Golds over the line and seal not just 23 points, but local bragging rights too.

The result temporarily moves Notts to the top of Division Two pending the outcome of Middlesex’s game against Durham, but regardless of the result at Lord’s the Green and Golds are guaranteed to be no lower than second as the red-ball game now pauses to make way for the Vitality Blast.
