As Notts Outlaws commence their 2022 Vitality Blast campaign against the Worcestershire Rapids on Friday, Samit Patel will partake in the tournament for the 20th successive year.

Read on for a taste of his T20 journey, in numbers.

20

Seasons of Vitality Blast, with Samit having featured for Notts Outlaws in them all.

2003

The year of Samit’s T20 first team debut. The following summer, he would make quite the impression upon meeting David Hussey. “My name’s Samit Patel. I bat, bowl and field.” Indeed, you do, young Samit. Indeed, you do.

14

The cost of Samit’s first delivery in T20 cricket. No-ball, hit for six. Resultant free hit, hit for six also. Things could only get better, and happily they did.

206

Samit’s T20 appearances for the Outlaws prior to the 2022 competition. Nobody has made more.

181

T20 wickets for Notts… often taken at the most opportune of moments.

26.30

Samit’s T20 bowling average for Notts. A highly respectable figure.

27.54

Samit’s batting average in T20 cricket for Notts. Having moved from the upper echelons of the order to, at times, as low as number eight, Samit has performed every role, and done so with flair, with character and with distinction.

25

T20 fifties for Notts. A showman by trade, a calm head by experience and by nature a will to win that screams ‘never say die’. Many times a matchwinner whilst wielding the willow, delighting the Trent Bridge faithful in the process.

90 not out

Career best with the bat in T20, against Yorkshire at Headingley in 2015.

18

Caps in T20 cricket for England. The national side’s loss has been Nottinghamshire’s gain.

250 and 5,000

Last summer, Nottinghamshire’s natural born thriller became the first ever Englishman to complete the 250 wicket, 5,000 run double in T20 cricket.

15

The number of teams the Nottinghamshire stalwart has represented, in T20 or its equivalent short forms around the world: Dambulla Vikings, England, England Lions, England XI, Galle Gladiators, Islamabad United, Lahore Qalanders, MCC, Melbourne Renegades, Rajshahi Kings, St Lucia Kings, Warriors, Wellington, Notts Outlaws and Trent Rockets men. Through it all, an Outlaw through and through.

4-1-4-3

Four overs, one maiden, three wickets and four runs. Samit Patel’s opening spell against Worcestershire Rapids in 2021 ended the game as a contest within the opening quarter-hour. It was the most economical four-over analysis in the history of T20 cricket.

2

Tournament victories. Took centre stage at Finals Day in 2017. Three years later, his rescue act with the bat secured Quarter-Final qualification.

3

The number of additional seasons Samit is eyeing up before retirement. He’s determined to cross his palms with some silverware during the course of that time.
