Nottinghamshire’s bowling contingent battled hard on a tough day at Trent Bridge on Day One of their clash against Warwickshire in the LV= County Championship.

Two wickets for the in-form Jake Ball and a wicket each for Calvin Harrison, Lyndon James and Dane Paterson were the highlights for the home side, as the Bears accumulated 361 runs by the end of play.

A century for Sam Hain helped Warwickshire towards their score, with Alex Davies and Dan Mousley both within fifteen runs of a ton, the latter sharing a 171-run partnership with Hain.

The return of red ball cricket came as blazing temperatures graced Trent Bridge, and the away side duly elected to bat after winning the toss.

Warwickshire entered the day second in the LV= County Championship, with Notts looking to close the gap on the top three by the end of the four-day fixture.

Jake Ball returned to the Nottinghamshire side for his first appearance of the 2023 season and claimed his 200th first-class wicket for Notts during his fifth over of the game.

Rob Yates clipped Ball’s delivery off outside edge, with fellow returnee Tom Moores claiming the catch to dismiss the opener for 13.

Will Rhodes entered play and formed a respectable partnership with Davies, as Warwickshire took lunch at 91/1.

But Ball prised the breakthrough with opening over after the break when Rhodes chose to leave his delivery. The ball nipped in off the deck to remove the Warwickshire captain for 37, queuing the entrance of Hain.

Davies reached his half-century from 89 balls, but fell without doubling, trapped lbw by a full Harrison delivery.

Mousley joined Hain to bat and both reached half-centuries, off 78 and 109 balls respectively.

But as the score increased, so too did Mousley desire to reach his maide first-class century, and a rush off blood saw him skip down the wicket and feather through to Moores for 87.

Hain reached his century with four overs left in the day but did not last much longer as Lyndon James uprooted the stumps of the Warwickshire man in a delivery that reflected the temperatures at Trent Bridge.

The Bears finished the day’s cricket on 361/5, with Ed Barnard amassing an unbeaten 12 and Danny Briggs on 4.
