Georgie Boyce hit 82 and Cassidy McCarthy claimed three wickets, but Bethan Ellis’ 108 saw The Blaze 2nd XI slip to a four-wicket defeat against Surrey.

Having taken first use of the pitch following an uncontested toss, The Blaze posted 285 all out thanks to Boyce’s top score of 82 and Michaela Kirk’s swift 66-ball 77.

Emily Burke returned figures of 5/48 from her ten overs to keep The Blaze in check, even as opener Boyce shared in partnerships worth 75 with Flora Davies and 63 with Kirk.

Kirk herself hit ten fours and went to her fifty in just 47 balls, only to be bowled by Burke, who then completed her five-for by taking both of the final two wickets in the penultimate over.

McCarthy gave The Blaze a strong start by uprooting Bethan Miles’ off stump in her second over, but successive strong partnerships returned the initiative to Surrey.

Ellis was involved in all three, helping the visitors to 237-4 by the time her 118-ball innings, which included 13 fours, came to an end at the hands of Amy Wheeler.

McCarthy returned to the attack to claim a further two wickets in six balls, finishing with figures of 3/36 from her ten overs.

As she did so, Surrey had slipped from 237-3 to 246-6, but Burke added to her earlier bowling display with an unbeaten 19, while Priyanaz Chatterji hit 17, to sneak the Brown Caps home.
